Burnout is a part of being a mental health provider. It comes with the territory: so let's talk about it and allow those emotions to be there. There is no shame, there is nothing you're doing wrong. Caring for others and using ourselves as The Tool of Our Work can be exhausting. That, along with the systems of oppression in which we exist, including racism, sexism, capitalism; receiving unfair pay; the expectations of ourselves/others; student loans...I'm sure I don't need to go on, it's a lot and contributes to our burnout levels.
β
Burnout is going to come and go in your career. How you recognize it and prevent/manage it is up to you; however, with this and other supports, I hope it can be easier.
β
βSide note: Ilyse also recommended this book in our group, which I also recommend: β
β
\"Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle,\" by Emily Nagoski, PhD and Amelia Nagoski, DMA
β
Ask me how much of the book I've read and I'll be honest: not all of it. Because I've been burnout on reading (and especially any therapy-related content), so I have to pace myself. I encourage you to do the same.

Today's Tip
\nDo you find that having too many of the same types of clients affects your level of burnout? I do! This is why I struggle with developing a niche-I truly enjoy seeing individuals and couples, with varied demographics. This may not be true for you, but today I want to suggest you consider doing something different versus doing less -- sometimes variety is what we need, if not in client care or other ways we can influence as much, then perhaps in other areas.
\nTake care of yourself today,
\nβElizabeth π

\nI offer 30-minute and 60-minute consultations- reach out to schedule a rich clinical discussion about your practice, your self-care, Self as a Therapist, and more!

Burnout Check In
In my consultation group last week, our leader Ilyse mentioned the topic was burnout and she asked how we responded to hearing that. I was excited to talk about it, which likely wasn't a response people were expecting. I don't think it's talked about enough, which is one of the reasons I started this newsletter.
