Sustainability
When you hear sustainability, you may think of recycling or climate change. Of course, those are important, we need to take care of our Earth for human survival.
Today I want to talk about sustaining ourselves in our careers of mental health. There is a lot to say; however, I've promised you, dear reader, a short newsletter. I'll keep it brief with a few thoughts:
ββ
βShort-Term: How to get through between weekends, time off, vacations, and/or holidaysβ
β
1) Find ways to stay in the moment-often our future thinking/planning too far ahead can be taxing
β
2) Find things to look forward to during the workday and/or at the end of the workday- small breaks, a delicious meal, a fun coffee, chatting with a colleague, or goof around on Twitter (not me, lol)
β
3) Keep the basics of caring for yourself a priority - identify what absolutely needs to be done and see what you can let go of for now in terms of other chores, errands, etc.
ββ
βLong-Term: How to get through the months, years, decades
Okay, first- don't panic when I mention decades! They do go by fast. I'm about to enter decade #3 soon. (Yikes!)
β
βChange: You can change your job, but also you can change the type of work you're doing. I've talked about the importance of variety in a past recent edition. Many of us have been taught to think our career is linear with steps that involve, "progress." When I was in a Leadership role, I was worried I would miss direct clinical care (I did). Someone reminded me, "You can always go back to that someday." (I have). Private practice has been great, but for me, may not be the end all/pinnacle of my career. Options are good.
Compassion: Find ways to hold extra compassion for yourself. Any way you can, as often as you can. You're doing your best, you won't be perfect, and that's okay!

There is such distressing and horrifying news...

Cardigan Club I'm going to be honest and vulnerable: I have no idea what to say right now, except this. I don't want to make it about me (more than I already have, lol)...but I know others are going through similar circumstances, so here goes:I've had COVID for the past 2 weeks. This has been scary, frustrating, and hard for a number of reasons. I definitely have noticed less energy. I made the decision to postpone and reschedule my EMDR training, the main thing I was going to give focus to...
